Until 1912, it was the last Greek village in the area near the border with Turkey and was called Baxilari. The modern Greek name of the village is attributed to its location by the river.
The inhabitants of Parapotamos are mostly breeders and farmers, while the area is famous for the production of olives.
The bridge at Vernezi, made by the Turkish Barack, the master of the Thessaly Region in 1506, was located in the area, but was ultimately destroyed in 1897.
