Built to the west of the valley of Tempi (towards the side of Olympus), the town owes its name to the homonymous ancient city of Perrebia (a region on the borders of Macedonia with Thessaly, south of Olympus), which flourished during the Historical Years.
At a distance of 3 km from the location of modern Gonnoi, on a hill called Kastri, lie the ruins of the Ancient City of Gonnoi. Particularly noteworthy are the ruins of three ancient temples (Artemis, Athena and Asclepius) found in the area.
The women's cooperative "Antigonides", which produces traditional products (sweets, jams, pies, etc.), is based in Gonnoi.
