Pyrgetos, with over 1,500 permanent inhabitants, is an essential commercial and cultural center of the region. It is a beautiful village, amphitheatrically built on the foothills of Mount Olympus, harmoniously combining picturesqueness and natural wealth with modern infrastructure and public services of small urban centers.
Particularly picturesque are the churches of Pyrgetos, actually "planted" in beautiful wooded areas, while remnants of stone bridge "Petrogefiro" can be found in Livadi, built in 1726 to facilitate the communication and transportation of products from one Peneos side to another.
In the center of the village stands the statue of Marinos Antypas, who fought for agricultural reform and was murdered in Pyrgetos in March of 1907.
Pyrgetos was also the birthplace and and residence of the great clarinet virtuoso and songwriter Vaios Malliaras.
